OAKLAND — A 41-year-old bicyclist died Sunday afternoon after he crashed while riding in the Oakland hills, authorities said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the man Monday as Oakland resident Jamal Thompson.

Thompson was found about 1:56 p.m. Sunday in the 5900 block of Shepherd Canyon Road and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said he somehow lost control of his Bianchi bicycle while riding by himself southbound on Shepherd Canyon, causing him to crash and ejecting him onto the roadway.

Police have not yet determined if speed or some kind of medical issue was a contributing factor to what happened. Police said he was wearing a helmet.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the police traffic investigation unit at 510-777-8570.
