SAN JOSE — A spectator was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle Saturday night during one of four illegal sideshows in the city, which also saw police issue more than 30 citations, authorities said Sunday.
Police did not say if the injured person was a man or woman. The person was dropped off at a hospital by a friend, police said.
Sgt. Christian Camarillo, a department spokesman, said police believe the person was injured at a sideshow at San Ignacio Avenue and Great Oaks Parkway.
He said the other ones were at Capitol Expressway and Tully Road, Fourth Street and Santa Clara Street, and Old Bayshore Highway and Commercial Street.
Each one attracted more than 100 vehicles, he said.
.Officers issued 17 citations for vehicle equipment violations and 15 for spectator violations at sideshows.
In a social media post, police said the spectator injury “illustrates how dangerous these events can be.”
San Jose, like many other Bay Area cities, has been plagued by illegal sideshows that can involve hundreds of participants and spectators and close down streets. Speeding, doing doughnuts and other dangerous types of driving are the norm at the events..
There have been fatalities at some sideshows in different cities as well as violent crimes, including homicides, non-fatal shootings and sexual assaults.
