SAN LEANDRO — A woman and a man escaped injury Thursday morning when someone in another vehicle opened fire on their car as they drove on Interstate 580 in San Leando, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Honda the two were in was hit at least six times by the gunfire, the CHP said.

The CHP said the pair, whose relationship has not been confirmed, told officers  they were driving eastbound on I-580 at about 7:15 a.m. Thursday when they noticed a Volkswagen following them in the area of Golf Links Road. As they switched lanes, so did the Volkswagen they said.

They told the CHP that as they drove west of Dutton Avenue in the San Leandro area they heard gunfire from behind and realized their car had been hit.

They eventually got off the freeway in Castro Valley and called authorities. The CHP is searching for the Volkswagen and its occupants.

A detailed description of the shooter has not yet been released, nor has a motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the CHP at 707-917-4491.

Check back for updates.
