Man shot in Oakland

OAKLAND — A 43-year-old man who told police he was shot early Wednesday after he refused to give another man  money was in stable condition, authorities said.

The shooting happened at about 12:18 a.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of 35th Avenue near Harbor View Avenue in the Redwood Heights area.

Police responding to a report of a shooting found the man with a gunshot wound to his lower body.

The man was reluctant to talk to officers but did say he was outside working on his car when a man he did not know approached him and asked him for money and that when he refused the man shot him. He said the shooter fled in a vehicle and he did not provide police with a detailed description of the suspect.

The victim was taken to a hospital. Some shell casings were found in the area.
