ALAMEDA — A man in his 90s died Monday morning in a fire that moved through a single-story home, fire officials said.

Fire crews were called to the 2300 block of Eagle Avenue around 5:50 a.m. and found fire coming out of the basement and inside of the house, Alameda fire Capt. James Colburn said.

Neighbors told them there was a person inside, and crews immediately set their sights on finding him. They discovered him dead inside the home around 6:15 a.m., he said.

Fire crews declared the fire, which gutted the single-family house just off Park Street, under control 10 minutes later.

Authorities did not identify the man immediately but did confirm that he was in his 90s. Neighbors said he lived alone and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Investigators have not determined what caused the fire to start or where it began, Colburn said.
