OAKLAND — An Amtrak train collided in East Oakland Thursday morning with a truck belonging to a company hired to clear debris from near the tracks, causing a fire and the evacuation of train passengers, authorities said.

No injuries were reported.

The collision happened just before 9 a.m. near East 10th Street and Fruitvale Avenue.

Authorities said the utility truck belonged to a contractor hired by Union Pacific Railroad to clear debris along the tracks in the area and that it apparently had parked too close to the trackway and could not be moved in time before it was hit by Amtrak Coast Starlight Train 11 on its way from Seattle to Los Angeles.

No one was in the truck when it was hit.

At least 20 firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished a fire that broke out and also assisted with the evacuation of 111 train crew and passengers.

Union Pacific and Oakland police and representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board responded to the scene as well.
