FREMONT — Investigators with the BART Police Department are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect in a stabbing early Thursday at the Warm Springs station, authorities said.

Police released photos of a person of interest in the attack to help generate leads.

The BART police log released Thursday said the man was stabbed in the chest and buttocks and was taken to a San Jose hospital. He is expected to survive.

Investigators have not yet been able to interview the man to find out what led to the stabbing, and no arrests have been made, BART deputy police Chief Ed Alvarez said.

The stabbing happened Thursday on the access road in the station’s parking lot. Police were interviewing possible witnesses and reviewing video surveillance tapes to try and identify the suspect.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, BART police said Fremont police received a call at 2:18 a.m. reporting a man lying in the street near the station. Officers responded and found a 39-year-old transient with non-life-threatening injuries to his chest and buttocks. The station was closed at the time of the attack but reopened at its normal time.

When it was determined that the attack occurred on BART property, BART police took over the case. The transit agency released two images Thursday afternoon of a person of interest sought for interview.

The person is a white or Latino man in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds with a thin beard, mustache and goatee.  He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a San Francisco Giants logo and a dark knit cap.

Anyone with information is asked to call BART police at 510-464-7040 or 510-464-7044 or the BART tip line at 510-464-7011.
