OAKLAND — Diving crews found a person dead in the Oakland Estuary early Sunday, hours after witnesses saw a minivan crash into the water, authorities said.

Witnesses called 911 around 8:16 a.m. and reported that a truck went into the water off the 2900 block of Glascock Street, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Bryan Barr said. At 10 a.m., Barr confirmed that diving crews found a minivan.

Authorities at the scene confirmed they found the minivan along with a body. They did not say right away whether it was a male or female. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office was notified.

Witnesses at the scene said somebody drove the mini-van south on Derby Street before going up on the sidewalk and turning down an embankment into the water.

The mini-van floated briefly, then slowly sank beneath the water, witnesses said. Dive crews from the San Francisco Fire Department recovered it around 9:40 a.m. about 30 feet below the surface in an area between the Park Street Bridge and the Fruitvale Bridge.

Oakland and Alameda city firefighters responded first to the scene. No other information was available immediately.
