OAKLAND — A 22-year-old San Francisco man was fatally shot and a 29-year-old San Francisco man was wounded Saturday night in West Oakland, police said Sunday.

Their names have not yet been released. Police said the men were in an SUV when they were shot, with the man killed a passenger and the other man the driver.

Authorities said the shooting happened about 9:46 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Center Street across from the West Oakland BART station.

Police responded to the location after a ShotSpotter alert. Although they found numerous shell casings, no victims were found.

But at 9:52 p.m. the bullet-riddled SUV the men were in when the shooting happened was found more than two miles away stalled in the southbound lanes of Interstate 880 near 16th Avenue.

The 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the 29-year-old driver had already flagged down an ambulance and had been taken to a hospital where his condition was not available.

Police were later able to determine the two men had been shot on Center Street.

Police have not said how the two men knew each other or why they were in Oakland.

A motive for the shooting has not been released and no arrests have been made.

The killing is the 76th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year and the fourth since Thursday afternoon. Last year at this time police had investigated 58 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money in the shooting for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
