Death of woman in Oakland homeless camp fire being investigated as a homicide

OAKLAND — The death of a woman whose badly burned body was found June 28 in a fire-destroyed tent at an East Oakland homeless camp is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said.

.Authorities are still trying to confirm the identify of the woman, believed to be in her 60s, and contact her relatives.

Citing an ongoing investigation, police are not yet saying why they believe the woman’s death is a homicide.

She was found dead about 2 p.m. June 28 in a tent at a homeless camp in the 1200 block of 42nd Avenue that had burned along with some other tents. No other people were reported injured.

Authorities have not said if the fire started in the tent the woman was in or another tent. A cause for the fire has not been determined.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the case. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
