PIEDMONT — A resident and a firefighter were injured Tuesday morning after a house near the Oakland border caught fire, officials said.

The resident suffered  minor burns and the firefighter a shoulder injury that required his hospitalization, Piedmont Fire Chief Warren (Bud) McLaren said.

The fire started about 10:44 a.m. Tuesday in the garage of the multi-level house in the 100 block of St. James Place. A car inside the garage was destroyed, McLaren said.

The three adult residents residents were able to get out of the home on their own before firefighters arrived.

All nine Piedmont firefighting personnel on duty responded as did firefighters from Oakland.

An exact control time was not available, but firefighters remained on the scene until early afternoon.

Besides the garage, the exterior of the house sustained major damage.  There was some smoke and water damage to the interior said McLaren, who estimated total damage to be  between $275,000 and $350,000.

The exact cause is under investigation. The residents were being assisted by the Red Cross.

Smoke from the fire could be seen over a large area.
