FREMONT — A woman suspected of hitting a man with a cricket bat during an attempted robbery Saturday evening was arrested, police said Sunday.
The man took a strike to the head but the resulting injury was non-life threatening, police said.
The suspect was identified as Jaqualyn Moses, 37.
Authorities said both Moses and the 47-year-old victim are transients, but it was unknown if they knew each other before the incident.
The confrontation happened shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday near a convenience store in the 39000 block of Fremont Boulevard in the Central Downtown area.
Police said Moses was pushing a shopping cart when she approached the man and asked him for money. When he said he did not have any, she took the cricket bat from the cart and struck him in the head, police said.
The man was able to make it to the area of Beacon Avenue and Liberty Street a few block away where police were called. Officers found Moses nearby walking across the intersection of Beacon Avenue and State Street with the bat strapped to her chest.
Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said police don’t know where the bat originally came from.
Moses was arrested and was booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and second degree robbery, according to jail records.. She is being held in lieu of $130,000 bail and is due to appear in court May 5.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport most researchers say originated in England in the 1500s. It has since become popular all over the world, including in Fremont where cricket fields were installed in Central Park a couple years ago.
