OAKLAND — Alcohol appears to have been a factor in a hit-and-run incident that left a 10-year-old girl in critical condition Friday afternoon.
The girl, a fourth-grader at Franklin Elementary School, was struck by a red Toyota Camry in the 800 block of East 15th Street at about 1:25 p.m. on Friday. The car was traveling east and may have dragged the girl for a few feet before leaving her in the street.
The girl suffered multiple head fractures and remained in critical condition Friday afternoon.
Police arrested 35-year-old Annette Kozlowski after she allegedly attempted to flee the scene, crashed into a parked car in the 400 block of Foothill Boulevard and came to a stop in the middle of the street. Police said Kozlowski then ran, but was arrested by officers after trying to get a ride from a passerby.
Kozlowski is being held on multiple charges, including hit-and-run resulting in injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content over .08 percent.
She is currently behind held at Santa Rita Jail on $30,000 bail. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. at Wiley Manuel Courthouse.
On July 30, Kozlowski was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of an injection or ingestion device, cruelty to a child by endangering their health and driving when her privilege was suspended. Days later, Kozlowski was then arrested on charges of driving under the influence.
Just 10 days before the crash, Kozlowski had asked friends on Facebook whether they would be willing to attend a court-mandated Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with her.
